I am bigger than anything that can happen to me! Sometimes, emotions feel so big that it is hard to know what to do with them. Children, young adults, and often adults find emotions taking over. My House My Key offers a holistic approach to handling these big emotions. This beautifully poignant children's book teaches a giant lesson about resilience. Using the metaphor of our body as our house, the idea of external troubles-like sadness and sorrow-can be left outside of the house. Sadness and sorrow might wait outside, but they cannot enter without permission. Each of us has our very own key, and it is a powerful thing! With the magical key of mindfulness and self-love, we discover safety and strength that leave us completely in control of our inner world. Through lyrical text and beautiful illustrations, we see that while we cannot always stop the rain from falling outside, we can still choose to keep our own home warm, safe, and beautiful. This book is a must-have for:Children dealing with big transitions, anxiety, or sad days.Classrooms and counseling offices focused on Social Emotional Learning (SEL)Bedtime reading to promote a sense of safety, peace, and control before sleepEquip your child with the ultimate tool for emotional confidence. Because no matter how big the storm seems to be outside, we are all bigger than anything that can happen to us.
Hello, and welcome to my page. During my time as a teacher, I saw firsthand how much children often struggle with big emotions and feelings. That was my initial drive behind "My House My Key.", To help them, I gathered and tested practical tools that actually worked in my classroom. I have chosen this space to share some of those resources in hopes that you will use them effectively as well. As a teacher, it is easy to get caught up in the everyday expectations of scope and sequence and the impossible time constraints to fulfilling the benchmarks. However, if our children are struggling emotionally, they are not able to focus on what is happening at school. As difficult as it seems to add in another task for the day, the social emotional skills are really upfront to overall learning. Regardless of what a great teacher you may be, if a child is struggling emotionally, they are not interested in reading, writing and math. I am providing actual lesson plans to use with the books that I hope will be helpful. Some of the other resources I am sharing can be used for as little as 5 minutes to reset the mind for learning.
